I start with about 24-26 inch 2x2+ blank turning it upwards 4000 rpm
after sanding
I apply 3-4 coats of 100% pure tung oil Non Toxic
After a few days I turn it again on high speeds with a special non toxic Bees wax mix I have developed with manufactures of the products in the mix this really works or kinda burns the wax into the wood for a much longer life span and better waterproofing

sides are Walnut or the type, of wood the pin is made from, the brace in between varies, this one has wenge ,ash Finished in Tung oil then a satin UV non toxic finish applied to proudly display your pin . some have a slant to the base , as I am deciding on level vs slant for longer life of the pin so can be passed down to generations of family if properly maintained
